What are Runes?
Runes are an ancient European oracle, thousands of years old. They began as a set of symbols representing the mystery of Life, the forces of nature and therefore Spirit. They were designed to induce understanding and provide counsel to the never-ending questions we ask about Life. Their meanings and interpretations have been handed down and evolved throughout the ages. Typically today, they have been distilled down to around 25 symbols, give or take a few, depending on the tradition followed. I have chosen to use 24 symbols plus the blank for my sets. The blank rune is believed to be a contemporary addition to the system. I think it is very fitting for our time to create the new as our consciousness expands and for a reminder to bring in more faith, trust and the possibilities of unlimited potential, all held within that void.
The runes are an oracle- meaning “a medium by which a god reveals hidden knowledge or makes known the divine purpose” (Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary). Historically the runes would be cast as a whole set and all would be interpreted as to where and how they landed in the reading and in relationship to each other. This was obviously quite a process and was done by the “master”, shaman, wise one. A more simplistic contemporary use of the runes has evolved that allows anyone to use and understand them. By using basic 3-7 rune spreads or by pulling a single rune and having a good reference book, anyone can read runes for personal insight and growth. The runes do not tell the future. They can only tell you the present and inclinations/tendencies, it is up to the seeker to interpret and apply the meanings and insights given based on their own intuition and feelings.

When one uses a rune symbol on a talisman or piece of jewelry (for example) to draw that particular energy into their lives, then this is considered “magic”. The word magic has many connotations, so I find it is simply important for one to be clear on why it is they use the runes, regardless of what it is called. There is no aspect of these processes or products that are anything less than good when love is the goal. All these items have been made with love and hope for the good of all people. I trust you will use them accordingly.

Why use the Runes?
One would use runes as an oracle any time you desire insight into a life situation. For example, we may feel unclear about whether to act in a given situation or to remain still. The runes can guide you. Or we may feel confused by an incident and not sure how to respond. The runes can help you see another side or provide clarity to the situation. The runes can be an opening to a meditation, or an opportunity to look at our own behavior. The possibilities are vast once you begin. Through the use of runes one can quicken the development of their own intuition and sense of knowing. We all have the insight we need already within us. The runes help us bring it to the light, where we can see things more clearly. In consulting the wisdom of the runes we say yes to the Universe, its processes and our own evolution. Often they will simply affirm what we already know to be true. When we use the runes we open ourselves up to receive guidance and support from our own higher self, our Knowing self. From there we can learn to trust and love at a deeper level and the richer our lives become. If you are drawn to the runes, then I suggest you take the wisdom that is offered you.
What are Bind and Script Runes?

Bind runes are created in order to draw on the synergy of combining symbols together, thereby increasing the energy of a single symbol. Script runes are when you use the symbols individually, but strung together as we use letters to form words. Both are powerful and intriguing ways to use the runes.
You can choose your symbols by drawing the runes, or you may want to meditate on it, or go with what visually draws you in. I do not think the method matters. Trust you will be guided to find the runes that will work with you harmoniously and will help you to serve your highest good.
